Get Outdoors with the Kids this September.

This is the best time of the year to get out and about in Ireland. You’ll notice all the activities I’ve picked are all outdoor, basically because the weather in my memory is generally fresh, clear and sunny! Add to that the fact that summer madness is over and there are less queues and people everywhere… it’s the perfect time of year in Ireland. Here are my top 4 outdoor family activities for September, one for each weekend this month!

1. Bike Riding in Phoenix Park

Make like Beyonce and hire a Phoenix Park bike! On a bright, crisp autumn day, what a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Cycle around the park – look at the deer, stop for a picnic, go to the playground… Phoenix Park Bikes hire regular bikes, tandems and carry along / half wheelers, so a family of little ones are well catered for. Prices are very reasonable, see website for details www.phoenixparkbikehire.com

2.Country Estates

Country Houses and Estates such as Killruddery House and Gardens, Russborough House, Newbridge House and Farm and Airfield House in Dundrum run lots of events like family days, fairy picnics and treasure hunts throughout the year. They cater particularly well for families with small children, with safe gardens to run around in, petting farms, playgrounds and cafes for lunch. Check out their websites for details.

3. Maze and Labyrinths

Treasure Hunts, nature trails or just plain old mazes – hedge labyrinths are popping up everywhere and provide fun for all ages. Greenan’s Maze, Kildare Maze, Russborough House all have plenty on offer for families, and Kildare Maze in particular promises a full day of fun, with everything from picnics to crazy golf and petting farms, as well as lots to do for the smaller ones. www.kildaremaze.com
